Profile

Professor Wouter de Vos was appointed as an associate professor in the Department of Public Law with effect from January 2009. He teaches in Law of Evidence and Criminal Procedure, as well as the masters course in Advanced Criminal Procedure and Evidence. Prof De Vos obtained the BA(Law), LLB, LLM and LLD degrees from the former RAU(now University of Johannesburg (UJ)). He was admitted as an advocate in 1978 and practised at the Johannesburg Bar for three years. Over the next 27 years Prof De Vos occupied professorships of law at UJ(14 years), University of Stellenbosch(US, 11 years) and Rhodes University(RU, 2 years). He was head of the Department of Public Law at UJ and chairperson of the Department of Private Law at US. He was also the editor of the Stellenbosch Law Review.

Prof De Vos is the author of over 40 articles in accredited national and international law journals, contributor to two SA law books and five international publications. He is also the author of a booklet on class actions. Prof De Vos obtained a C1 NRF rating in 2002. He also obtained two high level research grants from two French research institutions, which required research in France for two respective periods of six months. He is a member of the Council of the International Association of Procedural Law and a member of the International Civil Litigation Committee of the International Law Association. He is a contributor to this Commitee's Report and Resolution on Guidelines for Transnational Group Actions adopted by the 73rd Conference of the ILA during August 2008 in Rio de Janeiro.
